Remote workers also tend to log more working hours and enjoy the work they accomplish due to the flexibility their virtual job affords them. They arent constrained by the 9-5 workday. And in a nationwidesurvey done by Sure Payroll, 61% of those surveyed said loud colleagues cause unnecessary distractions. 86% prefer to work alone and 40% say impromptu meetings cause them to become less productive. Better Work/Home BalanceWorking remotely and running a virtual business not only benefits you and your employees from an economic and business standpoint, but it also helps your mental health. In a recent survey done by Microsoft, Work/Home balance was the number one reason employees gave for choosing to work from home. Guidelines for Interviewing Short-Listed Leprechauns
Guidelines for Interviewing Short-Listed Leprechauns To mark St. Patricks Day (here in London), of course I have to write something about leprechauns. But to keep it relevant to jobs and hiring, it seems appropriate to explore a central leprechaun recruitment issue How to handle a leprechaun youve short-listed for a job. That special interviewing and vetting techniques are likely to be required should come as no big surprise after all, leprechauns are wily and mischievous, with a legendary agenda of their own, but with potential for big payoffs for the right employer willing to bet on riches at the end of the rainbow. Here are some general useful guidelinesTen Leprechaummandments, if you willto enaya your effectiveness and safety while interviewing a leprechaun1. Never preface a question with I would like to know. That may be interpreted by the leprechaun as one of your three wishes, in the event t he candidate is or becomes a captive, and therefore forced to fulfill your wish-trifecta.2. In general, their work experience is limited to making shoesin some instances only one shoe of a pair (or so it is said of them). Accordingly, short-listing should, where possible, be for positions with great skill transfer potential. Among the careers and jobs most suitable for a shoe-making leprechaun areDictator mentor Joseph Stalin and Mussolinis fathers started out as shoemakers (Mussolinis father having been a blacksmith, which means, among other things, making shoes for horses).Nike executive (mentor) Having mastered the ins and outs, so to speak, of shoe making, a Leprechaun will have a leg or shoe up on the competition and be well-qualified to mentor iron-fisted corporate leaders.GREEN-COLLAR LEPRECHAUNS, CHRIS AND TOBY, TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON, ST. PATRICKS DAY 2013 (Photo Michael Moffa)Boot and policy maker for jack-booted dictators who havent used up their three wishes.Note that in terms of satisfying ambitions of global dominance and undisputed rule over the masses, either advisory role may be suitable for a short-listed leprechaun.3. If you ask whether an Irish brogue has been a career asset, expect an answer about a 1. a coarse shoe of untanned leather, formerly worn in Ireland and Scotland 2. a mans heavy oxford shoe, usually with decorative perforations and a wing tip. Thats assuming that the leprechaun can understand your non-Irish accent.4. If, because of the other kind of Irish brogue, you dont understand anything the leprechaun is saying, never ask him to repeat ityour request may be interpreted and wasted as one of your three wishes (if you have three coming to you).5. Never tell a leprechaun hes been short-listed. Not only is he likely to take offensehe may also sue you and your company for discrimination if hes not hired.6. Dont be surprised if the leprechaun is decked out entirely in green (or, much less commonly these days, red, depending on h is lineage). Moreover, dont expect the leprechaun to ever wear anything else on the job. Although shoe making has only a limited skill-transfer potential in a segue to hospital employment, the leprechauns insistence on wearing green may require taking a close look at a hospital career, even if not in the hospital OR. Alternatively, a position with Greenpeace or some other environmental protection group could be given close consideration.7. Dont hesitate to offer so-called dollar-a-year jobs that provide a token honorarium to select leprechaun professionals who, in effect, are volunteering their services. Presumably, the leprechaun will have lots of gold stashed somewhere, even if not at the end of a rainbow (which is obviously blarney designed to deflect would-be thieves from the real cash cache).POSSIBLE LEPRECHAUN SIGHTING, DUBLIN 2013 (Photo Michael Moffa)8. If you are not sure whether the candidate (who may resemble Chris, Toby or the figure shown in the London and Dublin photos ) is a leprechaun, you might consider dangling a compensation package with payment in gold rather than dollars as a litmus test. Being hardcore gold bugs, a leprechaun will pounce on that offer. The problem with that is, in light of virtually limitless quantitative easing and an exploding supply of Fed-issued fiat U.S. dollars and risk of hyperinflation, almost every savvy job applicant will (or should) respond the same way and go for the gold.9. If you are considering a leprechaun for a position with respect to which he is inexperienced, dont say that the company is willing to take on a green recruit. That will either confuse him or land you in court (again, for discrimination, however veiled).10. If the leprechaun is not suitable for any current opening, consider holding him captive and extracting three wishes. To maintain an appearance of perfect professionalism, you should carefully consider making the first wish one consistent with your industry code of ethics and expectations, say, I wish there were a job I could offer you, which will raise no eyebrows or suspicions, .since you say that every day.

5 ways to establish a strong leadership brand
5 ways to establish a strong leadership brand5 ways to establish a strong leadership brandA brand is that indistinguishable factor that sets something apart from the rest. Marketers try to develop a brand that sticks and engages people to take action in many cases that means to make a purchase. The truth is that as much as people spend time establishing a brand, it is others that actually brand you. Social media makes it easy to label and brand things by building consensus.Brand does not merely apply to commodities such as soda and automobiles. It applies to services, people, and leadership. Chances are you are not aware of yur leadership brand. Rest assured, others are. They know who is capable and who is not. Sometimes your brand is so strong it is a stereotype - The CEO Suck Up, The Overachiever, The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Frantic Fanatic, The Office Gossip, Miss Self Important, The Chatterbox, The Micro Manager.Growing your self-awareness is the first tenet of building a solid leadership brand.Create a five-column matrix and fill in the blanks with responses to thefollowing points. When we have the humility to mindfully accept the truth of our situationon paper, it gives us a tangible and actionable plan to execute and track.1. Your aspiration List three things you want to be known forIf you arent sure, imagine you were giving your retirement speech. Looking back, what would you comment on as your most fulfilling accomplishments?2. Your perception What do you suppose your colleagues would say about you now? Be honestAsk yourself this What would be said about you at your funeral by 1) a friend 2) a family member and 3) a work colleague? What would those who dont care for you say?3. Your reality Ask five people you work closely with how they would describe you at workSend an email to five unbiased people with whom you have worked over the last year. Tell them you are working on your leadership development and want to know how they would describe your 1) strongest traitsand 2) areas of opportunity. Assure them you are not proud and see this as an opportunity to build your self-awareness. Accept that your perception may not be othersreality.4. Your opportunity What key area of opportunity do you want to address? Is there a theme to the feedback you have received from others? When we address a target area for improvement it helps to 1) Identify what triggers it, 2) deploy a calming technique in the moment such as a deep breath and 3) have a go-to strategy such as asking for clarification or more time to get back to them.5. Your It Factor What is your signature strength? What is the impact of that strength?Put context around this. Define it succinctly so that you may speak to it in meetings, in strategy sessions, and on resumes. If your signature strength is good listening and problem solver you might say, After having listened to all points of view I suggest that we do (X) and evaluate its efficacy by (Y).

When work is a pleasure, life is a joy!
When work is a pleasure, life is a joyWhen work is a pleasure, life is a joyWe recently came back from the first Retreat in charming VeniceSome people dread the image of a whole weekend sleepover with their colleagues, usually filled with cheesy teambuilding activities. But for me, it means a weekend full of fun and new memories with EnhancersDo you want to come and see me in Venice?, said ur Chief Innovator Mitko after we came back from the Power Week. He has been living there because of a university project and thought it could be fun if the whole team came for a visit. Thanks to ur adventurous souls, the decision welches easy to make and Yes was the only answer. We are better togetherI couldnt wait to go to ur Venice Retreat. As some of us work remotely, gathering together is always a blast. With the distance and focus on work, I often forget about Vessys sarcastic sense of humor influenced by Dublin, for example. We also planned to sum up ur learnings, takeaways, and amazing mem ories from the past year which I personally enjoyed the fruchtwein.A company of friends. Ive always dreamt of working in a company that states that about themselves. And it turned out that this description represents . ?? The trust, support when I need it and the freedom of developing my top skills from the very beginning. Oh, I also felt it on the plane to Venice. Im scared of flying, you see, and I will never forget how the others tried to comfort me throughout the flight. Cheers for that ??Believe it or not, some of our team members met in Venice for the very first time Yet they acted like theyve known each other forever. Good job, Georgi, for recruiting such a superb crowd.Related articlesChief Joy Officer A secret weapon of a successful businessBreakfast the most important meal of the weekVing Tsun the martial art thats improving our teams productivityWhy a retreat?2016 has been a pretty successful year for . One of the most positive things is that our team has grown from 6 t o 20 within 2016. It made our office a bit tight which led to choosing a new one. There were many other highs and lows, and we felt it was important to share them with each other. All the newbies, including me, could hear the history and all the old dogs could remind themselves of what brought to where it is now.The first nightWe arrived in our cozy hostel Generator in Venice on a cold Friday evening. We got into our bunkrooms which brought some good memories from high-school to my head. The night talks about our childhood boyfriends/girlfriends. Or a bottle of wine party where instead of a glass, each of us had their own bottle of wine to drink from. Just to be clear, this didnt end too well for some of us. (Psst, you know who Im talking about.) ??But lets get back to Friday evening. We gathered in the lounge area with the other Enhancers. After we had our short talks, hugs and glad to see you moments, we were ready to start throwing our 2016 wins on the wall with sticky notes.Id like to mention some of the things I think make all of us Most Proud Of working at . What I know for sure by now, is that our Top Strengths are turning a difficult situation into an opportunity and sticking together no matt er what.To celebrate, we went out in the quiet streets of Venice and made some noise. Nothing inappropriate, I think It was quite difficult to find a club which would fit all 18 of us in. We stopped at a place where they played salsa music and the night began I love a bit of salsita and I was surprised some of the others are actually pretty amazing at it Even the Colombian waiter said we dance like pros. Many tequilas, laughs and dances inspired by our Ving Tsun classes to a Kung Fu Fighting song, they let us play our own songs from YouTube. We left after the barman disconnected my phone from the speaker, at about 2 amThe Saturday adventureThe next day after our night out, we did some wandering around the streets of Venice together to clear our heads and explore its beautiful history and architecture. People say Venice is only for couples who are deeply in love. But I had a completely different feeling surrounded by people I love working with. Thanks to a detailed plan of our operations star Deni, each of us could decide what to do. Most of us (mainly the ones who could bear the hangover) stuck together at the end. We passed by Piazza San Marco, Saint Marks Basilica and San Marco Campanile. Since our Chief Innovator Mitko loves history, he happily took on the role of our private guide. The weather was cold and our energy level high. We walked with smiles on our faces ready to use selfie sticks at each corner. In the afternoon, we were on our way to a conference room. Each team presented their Q1 focus and the plan. When to Quit Your Job and When to Fall Back in Love With It
When to Quit Your Job and When to Fall Back in Love With ItWhen to Quit Your Job and When to Fall Back in Love With ItHow to Know When to Quit Your Job and When to Love It AgainHow are things between you and your job?Are you in an open relationship with your current job? You may elend think of it that way, but there are early signs that your outlook on work may benefit from a reset. Maybe things have been okay for a while, but the spark and the excitement of the early days are gone the honeymoon phase is over. As you might imagine, that does not help your commitment to your current job, and its not long until your co-workers and boss take notice. So when is it time to quit your job? How do you find the motivation to go to work and stay positive? If youre struggling with these questions, you might find that opinions around you ding into one of two camps. Some people think you should just cut ties and sail into the sunset in search of bigger and better things. Others cannot understand why youre restless and uneasy in the first place after all, nothing is drastically wrong. Some days, you are perfectly content at work. Other days, you could scream in frustration. What should you do?This paradox defines much of our personal and professional lives. Today, we have more options than ever before. Thats great, except when the possibility of something better sabotages and distracts you from building relationships and experiences where you are. Its so easy to get overly focused on annoying little things and miss the big pictureHere are five signs that your current job is a great catch and worth a little extra effort.1 The job delivers what matters most to youSure, your job might come with its own annoying factors an overly-talkative office neighbor, a difficult client, or a tight set of ausverkauf goals. However, if it also has financial and non-financial benefits that are important to you, walking away may be a mistake. In order to landsee the benefits of your current lo kalitt clearly, you must first be clear on your priorities. Try writing out a list of the factors that matter most to you (salary, specific benefits, length of your commute, growth potential, etc.) just as you would if you were considering a new job. If your current position meets your needs, an upgrade may be nice but not urgent.2 Job expectations are clear and you have the tools and resources to do whats neededLack of clarity on job expectations is one of the top red flags to be on alert for when youre considering a new opportunity. If your current position has a well-defined set of performance criteria and you have the tools and resources to do your best every day, you may actually be better off than you think.3 Someone at work cares deeply about your success as a person and a professional This may be your boss, a mentor, a co-worker, or a best friend. If you have the benefit of a reliable sounding board and a trusted ear when it comes to work dilemmas, professional growth, and p ersonal satisfaction, you have a valuable perk. Finding another job is not nearly as hard as making deep human connections when you get there.4 You have opportunities to learn and growEvery job has its own degree of boring and repetitive tasks that have to get done. However, if your position gives you an opportunity to learn new things and take on new challenges, you may be less stuck than you think you are. Keep in mind that sometimes, finding new opportunities may require proactive efforts. That might mean volunteering to lead a project, offering ideas for a pilot program, or asking to attend a conference or a client meeting. Seek out new chances to learn and grow, and take advantage of the ones in front of you that will help you stay positive and motivated at work.RelatedSkills You Can Learn on the Job5 You receive recognition and regular feedback on your performanceAcknowledgment of a job well done can do wonders for your motivation and commitment. Beyond praise and financial bo nuses, regular feedback conversations can provide you with a chance to reflect on things you could do better. If youre getting that already great If you would like more feedback, consider asking for it.Wondering how to love your job again? If you have discovered that rekindling the passion and the sparkle in your job is a worthwhile investment, here are five ways to do that.1. Take a breakSometimes, you need to walk away from a project or a task to realize that you miss it. Taking a break from work might look like a month-long vacation to an exotic island, but it does not have to be that to be drastic. Consider setting boundaries that will allow you to not work when you are off, whether by staying out of your work inbox between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., not taking any work home, or by not working on weekends. As a Type A super-driven professional, I have had trouble with this in the past myself until a psychologist next door recommended thinking of my work responsibilities as a sweater. J ust as you can leave a sweater on your chair at work, so too you can leave your assignments and deadlines behind the closed office door. By creating a clear boundary and allowing yourself to focus on family, friends, hobbies, and rest when youre home, you will find yourself to be more creative and productive when at work.2. Look for more of what you loveIt takes very little effort to find things to complain about. Bad coffee, aggressive air conditioning, difficult clients, tight budgets reasons to moan and sulk are plentiful. Instead of focusing on whats uncomfortable and annoying, choose to stay positive at work by looking for more of what you love. You might look forward to the opportunity to walk outside at lunchtime, a chat with an inspiring colleague, or a chance to contribute to a new project. That doesnt mean that you should color everything in rainbow colors and fake it. Instead, simply take the time to notice and acknowledge the many ways your professional life goes right. If you want more inspiration around this idea, look into the 21 day no-complaint experiment. 3. If an entrepreneurial path is calling your name, start your business without leaving your jobMany professionals dream wistfully of a way they can monetize their talents by launching their own business. If youre one of those people, why wait? You can start your business right now By taking the time to develop your idea on evenings and weekends, you can test drive the creative and exciting path of business ownership without leaving the security net of your current job. Having an outlet outside of work can do wonders for staying positive and motivated in the office.4. Look for people who are excited and engagedMood and attitude are terribly contagious. If you have decided to fall back in love with your job, you may have to actively seek out co-workers who are engaged, enthusiastic, and positive. Try making friends with interns and new staff their bright-eyed excitement can offer a great b oost to your day.5. Make small changesChange does not have to be overwhelming. By making tiny tweaks, you can introduce enough fresh elements to your job to make it feel like a whole new gig within six months. Whether you have your sights on a promotion, a cross-functional leadership role, or better work-life balance, start by taking the smallest viable step in the right direction. In closing, remember to be patient with yourself and your professional situation. Even the best jobs have boring or tough days, but that does not necessarily mean that you have settled for less than what you deserve. Bad attitude and poorly considered moves can hurt your career.Dont sabotage yourself by burning bridges or compromising your professional credibility. However, do take notice when bad days turn into bad weeks and bad months and know that it is time to leave the job. Even if you decide to leave, remember that a positive outlook and a focus on whats right is more attractive than a stream of nega tive comments. That will allow you to search for a new opportunity with grace and retain the goodwill of your colleagues and superiors valuable currency no matter what choose to do next.Click on the following link for more workplace advice. If its time to leave your job, make sure your resume will help you land your next one. The Y2K Bug on your resume
The Y2K Bug on your resumeThe Y2K Bug on your resumeYou may remember this global panic around the turn of the century. The Y2K bug was an obscure, but potentially disruptive, computer glitch that we spent $400 billion fixing. Midnight on New Years Eve 1999 came and went without the dawn of the apocalypse, however, and Y2K passed into history. But now the Year 2000 Problem rises again and this time its on your resume those dates and entries that indicate you were already out of college and in the workforce before the new tausend jahre arrived give too much latitude to age discrimination. At Ladders, weve got a simple solution for those of you with two or more decades of experienceDont list any dates on your resume before the Year 2000.Age discrimination is rampant in American work culture. Its unfair, unkind, and uncharitable of the world to treat you that way, but its also undeniably true that the bias against the olds is creeping its way further and further down into the demographics. It wont be long before the oldest Millennials are considered washed up by their youngest peers.Ive written at some length before on how Age Discrimination is Mindset Discrimination, and the steps you can take to thrive in job interviews because of your experience rather than fear them because of your age.But to master the interview youve got to get the interview. And to get the interview, youve got to remove anything from the process that can trip you up.And that means removing any date that looks like 19xx from your resume. Dates before the turn of the century give young resume screeners an unfortunately easy way to weed you out. Dont give them the chance. What specific steps should you take?Do list your college, MBA, or grad school, but do notlage list a graduation date.If you went to State U. back in the 80s, list the school, the degree, and the awards, but dont list a starting year or graduation date. This may take some getting used to. Because you identify with your alma mater an d those bright college years, your resume will feel barren at first without your class year emblazoned there. It may feel awkward, but its important to your cause - you will get used to it.Dont list your jobs before the Year 2000.Your capabilities sixteen years ago just have very, very little to do with your present qualifications. You were a different professional, at a different level, with different demands upon you and opportunities in front of you. Even if you were the wunderkind who was promoted the fastest and leapt the highest, its simply not relevant to your job search today. So on substance, there is almost no reason to have jobs from the last century listed, so leave them off entirely. If youre a sentimentalist, and you simply must list that first, career-making stint with Goldman Sachs or working in the Senators office, then put it under the heading Other Experience without date attached. And thats because those dates from a prior millennium seem like ancient, ancient hist ory to someone who matriculated kindergarten in 1999. If youve ever dropped by a recruiters office, you know that with the extraordinary volume of resumes received, the job of doing the first pass on screening has fallen on younger and younger shoulders each year.Honestly, they may not even be conscious of the fact that theyre putting us into the discard pile on the account of our age.So dont even inadvertently assist those latent tendencies on the parte of our new youthful overlords leave the dates from 1999 and before off your resume, and focus your story on your achievements in this century. Its the smartest way to get ahead in the New YearIm rooting for you.
