Yes, We All Hate Homework, But.

Yes, We All Hate Homework, But…. but sometimes we just have to do it! Note: of all the things that JibberJobber can help you with, this is probably THE MOST applicable, no matter what you do. If you are in a job search, or a business owner (coach, resume writer, small business, etc.), happily or unhappily employed, retired or whatever, this feature is applicable to YOU. Ive never been one to care for homework. When I went through a two-day job search course last year I wasnt very excited about doing the nightly homework that would help prepare me for an interview. I just thought about it that night and then scratched down my stuff the next morning before the class started, and came up with some okay stuff. We were tasked with preparing one Me in 30 Seconds and two Power Statements. When I looked at the seven others in the class I could tell that most had done what I did got a single sheet of paper, wrote, scratched, wrote some more, and ended up with a lot of chicken scratch and a couple of valuable sentences. I knew that these papers would not last beyond the weekend. So when I was designing JibberJobber I thought it would be cool to give users an area where they could enter as many of these types of statements as possible, and wordsmith them whenever it was appropriate. You know how network relationships are long term? So are these statements! Youll always be asked so, what do you do? or where do you work? or something like that. You should always have some appropriate responses ready that are better than well. uh. um well. heres a breakdown of what youll find in the Interview Prep area: Me in 30 Seconds also known as elevator pitch or UVP (unique value proposition) you need to have at least one of these. On the AskLizRyan Yahoo Group there was a significant discussion a couple of months ago about NOT having one, rather, having a bumper sticker. I dont care what you call it but I do know this figuring out a statement that is on-brand, the right length, intriguing and appropriate is not easy. Go into JibberJobber and put in as many as you want. Power Statements I was on a call last week with a user who said these are to motivate me, right? I laughed out loud (sorry) as I never thought of that before and it really struck me as funny! No, these are not self-affirmation, motivational things to get you out of bed or keep a smile on your face. Rather, these our powerful statements that can be used in a resume, an interview, an elevator pitch, etc. that really pack a punch (see also How To: Power Statements). Heres an okay example off the top of my head: I am ambitious. For example, when I was laid off during a massive restructure last year I started a new business that would provide others with career management tools. As a result, I created a new stream of income for my family and learned a lot about marketing and social media more than I ever knew as a consultant! Questions and Answers This is the place where you can put questions such as why did you leave your last job? or tell me about your two greatest weaknesses? or where do you see yourself in five years? I hate these questions because Im not quite sure what to say, or what the interviewer is looking for spending a little time to craft answers that are concise and appropriate you can look like a superstar in the interview! Premium Bonus for those that have upgraded to premium there is a really cool additional feature. You can categorize each of your interview prep answers and then later get a report based on the category. Heres why this is cool: Last year I had back-to-back interviews. One was for a small high-tech startup where I would work as a project manager. The other was for a big hospital chain where I would do project management/business analysis work. There were similarities in roles but the companies where so different! I wanted to craft different responses and statements for each interview but it was really, really hard to do this on paper. In JibberJobber, as a premium user, I could have categorized some responses as High-Tech Startup and other responses as Hospital Chain, and then printed off all responses for either category. I would then have one cheat-sheet to study for one interview, and another custom cheat-sheet for the other interview! (brilliant :)) For me, the hardest thing to do is come up with lasting, on-brand responses. I strongly recommend Brag! by Peggy Klaus and Career Distinction by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson. Of course, some of you will need coaching to really do a whiz-bang job. Dont hesitate to look up one of my partners (you can see a partial list here, the ones that are certified brand strategists) to get expert coaching. Id love to see your 30 second pitch or a power statement leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail. But definitely log into JibberJobber and click on Interview Prep to work on them there, also! How Popular Is Resume Writing Service?

How Popular Is Resume Writing Service?Do you know how popular is resume writing service? Before you run away from a resume writing service that offers so much help, know what you are looking for and read a little further. It is very easy to use a resume writer service to find the best job you ever have, but it is not as easy to land that dream job with one of these services.Do you know how popular is resume writing service? Do you know what companies are advertising them? You have to be able to get a real idea of how popular resume writing service really is, so you can ensure that you find the best one out there. There are so many services on the Internet these days, and each one of them offers some variation of the following: free samples, sample tests, resume writing services, and so on. Each of these can be a great way to find the right services for your needs. However, it can also be confusing trying to determine which of these services is best for you. You want to be sure that wh en you search for resume writing service that you have a little bit of information about each service. One of the first things you need to do is check if all of the resumes online that you see are legit. There are so many professional writers who just happen to work for companies that are offering resume writing services. Even if they are the best writers in the world, you may be wasting your time with their services because they could be selling something that is not exactly what you are looking for.A good way to find this information is by reading reviews. Reviews online of various resume writing services will give you a good idea of how popular is resume writing service is. You can also have someone else read reviews about them so you can make sure that they are legit and offer quality services.Another thing to look at is the type of services that are offered. Some of these companies will offer sample tests, and other may provide samples to clients to have them view a sample befor e actually hiring them. It is important to see how much the sample tests cost before you hire a company to do the work for you.The most important thing to remember when looking for a service to hire to write your resume is that you will be able to see if the services are available and affordable, so you can afford to use them in the best possible time frame. If the writers or the service are unable to do the work for you within the expected time period, then you should consider another one. It is a waste of money to use a service that is running out of money to do your job for you.So, while you will still need to look through the samples available to find a resume writing service that you can use, you can still take a look at the samples themselves to see if they can write the resume that you are looking for. This means that you will be able to see how many companies you are using in order to find the right service, and if you can't find what you need, you won't even have to worry a bout it. Keep in mind that you should only sign up for a service that offers samples, so you can see how the service handles this process, which is especially important if you have a medical situation where you cannot read well.

My B-Hive experience from creative brief to the NEC

My B-Hive experience from creative brief to the NEC This is a guest post by  Kate Watson, who graduated from Warwick this year with a degree in Theatre and Performance Studies. Kate entered the prestigious B-Hive competition and won a top placement with the NEC Group. She recounts her incredible experience here Ive always been passionate about theatre and chose my degree based on this, hoping to find an area of the arts that I could pursue as a career. After completing a marketing module and working in the marketing department of the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham, I knew this was where my future lay. Unfortunately often due to misconceptions theatre students sometimes get overlooked when it comes to business related jobs. The  B-Hive competition  was my way of proving to myself (and employers) that I was as able as any other degree student to succeed in marketing. And I did! B-Hive whats it all about? For those of you who havent heard of the B-Hive competition, its an opportunity for students from universities across the West Midlands to put their skills in marketing, PR, Advertising, Graphic Design and Web Design to the test by responding to a creative brief posted online. The judges select the best responses, inviting students to present their ideas to a panel of industry professionals; last years panel included representatives from Deloitte, NEC Group National Express. Its a great way to get your name out there and offers a fantastic (and much sought after) opportunity to gain paid work experience, with some of the Midlands biggest recruiters. Working at the NEC Group gave me invaluable experience of working for a large organisation experience that I probably wouldnt have got otherwise. The NEC Group incorporates several large venues across Birmingham, including the NEC, ICC, NIA and LG Arena, as well as ticketing agent The Ticket Factory and catering company Amadeus. Consequently, the office is a fast-paced, vibrant place to work, full of busy yet friendly staff each making a contribution to a different area of the organisation. Getting experience My main role during my time at the NEC was in digital marketing. This presented both challenge and opportunity, as it was a not an area Id previously considered working in. Amadeus had gained a large contract catering at the Olympic park during the games and consequently wanted to update their website to highlight the variety of events they cater for and services they provide. The main website template had been created and I was responsible for inputting visual elements of the website, ensuring the images used reflected the key themes and messages within the website copy. This task highlighted how important branding was to each strand of the NEC Group as each part of the organisation had to exist independently with its own key aims and messages, while existing under an umbrella organisation, the NEC Group. I think this gave me an excellent insight into marketing strategy and how to align the message and the delivery. Working in a large organisation I was introduced to the advanced and intelligent e-bulletin system the NEC Group used in order to target customers effectively with events. Due to the large variety of events taking place in each of the venues, it is important that customers are not bombarded with information about everything taking place at the venues each month. Consequently, a system is used which tailors an e-bulletin to each customers needs, advertising Justin Bieber to previous concert attenders of his or similar concerts, while promoting car shows to automotive enthusiasts. While I have used segmentation previously to understand audiences needs and wants, I have never seen it used on such a scale a direct result of working for such a large organisation with the financial resources to introduce such sophisticated technology. Looking ahead Working at the NEC Group allowed me to experience working for a large organisation. Having worked for smaller companies previously I have now had the opportunity to explore the pros and cons of each, and consider my options for the future when pursuing my career in marketing. During my placement I had an interview at the Town Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, securing a more permanent position as Marketing Assistant (maternity cover). Unfortunately this meant that I had to cut short my time with the NEC Group, but I am extremely grateful for the whole experience and know that it will continue to pay dividends in terms of the skills Ive gained and the contacts Ive made. In applying for the B-Hive competition I was determined to stretch myself and show that I could thrive in a fast-paced, commercial environment and thanks to the NEC Group, Ive done it. Future employers will now see that I am an arts graduate with creativity and business experience and I feel confident that this combinati on will help me stand out when applying for more permament roles in marketing. The final word I would certainly encourage Warwick students to apply for B-Hive. Not only will it give you fantastic experience in a creative industry environment, but potentially a great head start to your career. Submit that brief you don’t know where it might take you! * If youre tempted to have a go, check  B-Hive  for further info and  dates for your diary

Top 6 Ways Studying Abroad Will Change Your Life

Top 6 Ways Studying Abroad Will Change Your Life It may be that it is only recently that you have been considering studying abroad or it could be that you’ve been considering it for some time. Whichever the case, you’ve probably heard or read by now that studying abroad will change your life. Well, this is true. But, what is far more important is how it will change your life. Traveling across the world and taking some classes will not change your life if you are not prepared with an open mind to all of the new amazing experiences that are about to come your way. Read on for the top six ways that studying abroad will change your life- for the better! Then, go buy that ticket and make the leap. Youll thank us later. And make sure you send us a postcard! Heres How Studying Abroad Will Change Your Life 1. It will make you more independent. If you are considering studying abroad, the chances that youll live with and attend the exact same classes as a current friend are slim. But dont worry, this is actually a good thing for learning and life changing experiences! Plus, you probably wont have family in the new country you are heading to. This means that you will be entering into this new world on your own. As a result, independence will be thrust upon you. But don’t be scared. While this may be intimidating at first, it will get easier. Over time, being independent will become second nature. Knowing how to look after yourself, and doing so confidently, is a skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life. One day you might want to buy a house on your own. You may have to attend an important job interview on your own. The independence you learn through studying abroad will aid you in both of these things and more. This independence will likely be quite fun when you are feeling happy and settled. However, it is only wise to be aware that you may not feel like this all the time. Homesickness is very common, no matter your age or how ‘tough’ you think you are. Similarly, if you become sick or go through any personal challenges like a breakup, you won’t have your usual support system to rely on. However, it is nothing but true that getting through hard times on your own is character building. It makes you a better person, a stronger person. Further down the line you will look back and be so proud of yourself for managing it alone. Don’t forget also that you will make new friends when you study abroad. These new people will become your support system. If anything, your new friends may even more comforting and helpful if you let them in because they are experiencing a similar thing. 2. It will open your eyes to new cultures. Often, when you study abroad, you are placed in housing with other students who are also studying abroad. What does this mean? It means that you are in close proximity, every single day, to people from other countries. You may have a roommate from China. There maybe two students across the hall from Finland and Australia. You may share breakfast one morning with a girl from Ecuador, lunch with a girl from South Africa and then dinner with a girl from Japan! You will learn many new things about different cultures, from tiny details through to huge culture differences. For example, youll learn what people eat for breakfast in each different country. In Ecuador, an apple and a glass of milk are common. But in England, they love their tea and toast. You will also see bigger issues shaping the world such as political or economic issues and youll never view certain news items the same way again. This leads to all sorts of interesting conversations and debates. From the tiny things to the bigger things, you will learn about others but also learn a lot about yourself and what you really think about important issues of our time. Be open to these conversations and allow your own perceptions (or prejudices) be challenged or even reshaped. 3. It will impress employers for years to come. Even though you are studying at the moment, a career is likely on the horizon. Being able to add that you studied abroad will impress employers for many years to come. Why? It demonstrates your flexibility and your character. It shows you are a high achiever and well organized to plan out your studies and travel at the same time. It shows you have initiative and can adapt to new situations quickly. It also shows you are bold and brave. You had the strength of character to leave the people and places familiar to you behind for a new experience. Not to mention that it provides a fantastic talking point in interviews. Studying abroad is a privilege that only a handful of people get to experience. As a result, it is something that people will always want to ask questions about. When answering these questions, give a balanced view. You don’t need to pretend it was all perfect. People will see through that right away. It is far more valuable to talk through what you learned, both the good and the bad. It’s not just employers that will be impressed, but clients too. You can wow clients with your different stories and experiences. One day you may even work with a client who is from the location you studied abroad at. This will give you an instant connection and give you a great start! 4. It will immerse you in a new language. We’ve already mentioned that studying abroad puts you in close contact with new cultures. In doing this, it also puts you in touch with something else. New languages! It could be that you are already bilingual; being immersed in new languages will only improve your skills. But if you only speak one language, even better. Being around different languages, it is only natural that you will start to pick things up. If everyone is speaking the same language  say English, for example everyone will occasionally use their own words. This might be just to say little things, like ‘thank you’, or ‘what?’. But hearing these new words and languages will affect you and you’ll start to learn new words without even realizing it. You never know, you might be so inspired by a particular accent or dialect that you want to dive in and try to become fluent by the time you leave. You could find a course, but you also potentially have a free teacher in the form of a new friend. Offer to do language swap lessons a couple nights each week. Meet for a drink, or food, and spend one hour teaching them your language, then swap. It’s free, fun and social. You will learn a skill that will help you for the rest of your life. Having a second language isn’t just useful for yourself, employers or future schools will regard it highly as well. 5.  It will teach you to adapt. When you study abroad, you will be subject to new languages, people, and cultures. You’ll also be subject to a new way of learning and a new method of education. Teaching and methods vary from country to country and you will have to adapt to these new ways. It could be that you have a lot more time in the classroom with a teacher than at your home institution or it could be that you have a lot less. You may have to do a lot more studying on your own and youll have to find a quiet space to learn. It could be that your hours of learning hugely increase, or decrease. It could be that you spend more time in classrooms or more time in the library or more time out and about doing research or projects. Whatever the differences are, they are all still very valuable experiences. You will be given new tools and skills that you didn’t already have. You ability to adapt to new challenges and surroundings will improve. Once again, these are things that will improve you as a person forever. 6. It will inspire you to learn new interests. Something interesting happens when you fling yourself into another country in a study abroad program. Because everything around you changes, you start to find changes happening within yourself. As we’ve already mentioned, you might be able to speak a few more words of Spanish suddenly, or feel more independent. But, this change also feeds into another area of your life, your hobbies and interests. When you are around a new environment, you might find a hobby that you love that you couldn’t do where you lived before. Let’s say you move from a landlocked island to Australia for a year to study abroad. Suddenly, a whole world of watersports is open to you now. From surfing to open water swimming, you may find a new sport that you’ve never even tried before. It’s not just hobbies that might crop up, though; you may also find yourself a new career path. You might find that you want to work in a new industry that you didn’t know much about before. Similarly, you might love the country you are studying in so much that you want to find a way to live and work there after you graduate. By exposing yourself to the many different experiences of studying abroad, new and exciting opportunities will come your way. Be open to these things and it will change your life, for the better. Are you struggling with Impostor Syndrome - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Are you struggling with Impostor Syndrome Are you struggling with Imposter Syndrome? By Lindsey Hood Do you worry that you are not good enough to go for that promotion? Do you live in fear that your manager is going to find out that you are not up to the job and is going to fire or demote you? Do you have sleepless nights worrying you are going to be found out as some sort of a fraud? Do you have evidence, such as experience, training, qualifications and skills that would suggest none of these fears are warranted? If yes, you may be struggling with the imposter syndrome the feeling that you are some sort of ‘imposter’ within your career and do not deserve your current position or life circumstance, regardless of the evidence to the contrary. And you are not alone! Up to 70% of individuals will struggle with these feelings at some point in their life. The term Imposter Syndrome was first coined in 1978 by 2 psychologists, Dr Pauline Clance and Dr Suzanne Imes. Their research found that high performing women, no matter their accomplishments, still remained convinced they didn’t deserve their success or accolades and that they were in fact a fraud. These successful women dismissed their successes as luck or some kind of deception on their part in convincing someone they were better than they actually are. Clance and Imes original research was focused on high achieving women, but further research has shown that men are just as likely to be affected by this phenomenon. Why do I feel like I’m not good enough? Feelings of self doubt may arise for many reasons, but the one I want to focus in on today is that you may currently be thinking in a polarised way:  they are perfect (and this ‘they’ is everyone around you); I am not. This thinking comes from your own self awareness. You can easily recall any mistakes you’ve made, any difficulties you’ve faced, the [constructive] criticism you’ve received. All of these things are part of your unique experience of being yourself, and many of these things will now be part of your ‘story’. For example, if your manager told you that a presentation you gave was not engaging, you may now tell yourself that you are not good at giving presentations, or that you are not a great public speaker. Whenever you have to do something that you don’t feel comfortable doing, you see yourself as ‘acting’ rather than ‘being’ a certain way. You then compare this to everyone else. But the others are the images you see your manager that seems so cool, calm and collected, your colleague that seems organised, the other candidates going for the job you want that have all the experience and qualifications required to do the role better than you. And with social media the pressure is even greater with airbrushed celebrities and friends and colleagues sharing their highlight reels. You are taking all of this information at face value. You are not thinking about how the individuals are feeling, that maybe they have internal struggles and self doubt, that maybe they have to work at the skills you see as natural to them, that they also make mistakes. You take an external view only you see what they are showing the world, not what they are necessarily feeling. You see everyone else as ‘being’ a certain way, rather than ‘acting’. Although both these views are your truth, it isn’t a fair comparison. By taking your external view of them, you are saying they are fully deserving of their status/situation this is who they are, and they are definitely not an imposter; and because you are acutely aware of everything you have been through in your life you feel that you are not deserving because you don’t think you compare to them, thus you must be an imposter. But think about the statistic of 70% of us struggle with these feelings this means 7 out of 10 of the ‘them’ you think about have some level of self doubt. The same way when people look at you, they see a certain image someone who is capable and competent that is what you are seeing when you look at others. Remember, the image you see is not the same as how someone is feeling. How do I overcome these feelings of self doubt? Below are some ideas that Ive found particularly useful:: REFRAME YOUR FEELINGS You often feel like an imposter when you are trying something new for example, a new job role, a promotion, or even a new hobby or leisure activity. Accept that when you are learning something new these feelings are natural for you and part of the change cycle. Reframe your thinking and embrace it as a good thing it means you are learning and growing! ACKNOWLEDGE PAST ACHIEVEMENTS I ask clients to keep a journal with everything they have achieved to this point big and small so they are building an evidence bank of things that they have accomplished. Once you have mastered a particular skill or have been doing something for a period of time, you start taking it for granted. But at some point in time, it wasn’t easy or something you could just ‘do’ you learnt it and went through a process. Yes, you may be facing into something different, but you now have a wealth of evidence of your resilience and resourcefulness when facing into varied and sometimes difficult situations that you can pull on to know you can get through this new challenge as well. CREATE A PLAN Think about your ideal situation where you know you wouldn’t feel like an imposter. For example, if you are wanting a promotion, identify what you genuinely need to learn and develop to get the new position and then get the help you need. Feelings of self doubt can feel crippling, and can really hold you back from achieving your full potential, but working through exactly what you need to do, in an objective way, can help you see the steps you need to move you from where you are today, to where you want to be, with confidence. The steps you may identify might be getting a mentor, working with a mindset coach, talking to your manager about your career aspirations, working towards a new qualification, improving your interview skills, getting professional help in re-writing your CV. Timeline out how long these steps will take you. And then start taking action action builds confidence as by doing these things you are further adding to your achievements and proving to yourself (so pr oviding your own evidence to quieten your self-doubt) that you can do this References: (1) The Imposter Phenomenon in High Achieving Women: Dynamics and Therapeutic Intervention Pauline Rose Clance Suzanne Imes Published in Psychotherapy Theory, Research and Practice Volume 15, #3, Fall 1978 Author bio: Lindsey Hood is a gentle life and executive coach who specialises in working with  women who secretly struggle with impostor syndrome those feelings of being a fraud within their career, that they will get found out and the belief that they are not good enough to be in the position they are in. Telephone Interview - 4 Tips to Interview Success IM HIRED

Telephone Interview - 4 Tips to Interview Success Ring Ring Your Next Career is Calling When applying for roles, you’re no doubt going to have to jump through a whole lot of hoops to get an offer. One of the first stages of any interview process is the telephone interview, but for most of us the telephone seems to have a strange affect on us. Talking to someone over the phone, can be the scariest part of the interview process. But take it from a recruiter, it’s just a conversation. So follow these 4 steps to land yourself a spot in the next round of interviews. Be Prepared for the Telephone Interview Like any interview, you need to be prepared for any questions that may come your way and that starts with researching. This is your chance to highlight how you’re the perfect candidate, tailoring your core skills and experiences to the job specification, making you more memorable to the recruiter. Most telephone interviews will start with questions such as “Why did you apply for this role?” or “What do you know about X company?” You may have applied for several positions but don’t get caught out by forgetting which job is which. Tailor your answers and be sure to showcase how you match each of the job requirements. Have examples on hand, filtering facts and figures into these occasions to add credibility. **TOP TIP** Sell yourself by having an attention grabbing opening. Engage the interviewer by summarising your experiences and any relevant qualifications, setting the tone for the rest of the interview. Consider your Location This might seem like a strange one, especially when you and the interviewer aren’t going to see each other face to face. But location is an important aspect of any telephone interview. Your full focus needs to be on forming a connection with the interviewer, have a location in mind where you can’t be distracted. Consider noise levels as well as whether you have a good phone signal. Those strong interview answers you have prepared will be wasted if the recruiter can’t hear you or the flow of the conversation is lost as your phone keeps cutting out. Remember you don’t need to complete the telephone interview then and there. Arrange a time that suits you, when you’re away from work and make sure to be on time. Get Connected Interviews are much more than just merely documenting your work history. With hundreds of applications per job, you need to stand out from the competition. Forming a connections and building a rapport with the interviewer is the easiest way to do this. Let your personality come through in the interview. Find common ground with the interviewer, helping them to see how you would fit with an existing team. Remembering key details from your interview, can help you personalise a post interview follow up message. Dress to Impress Whilst no one is going to see your outfit, getting dressed for success is all about mind set. It might be more comfortable to sit in your PJ’s, but having a professional appearance will translate to a professional attitude. Try and stand up whilst speaking to help project confidence in the call. Take time to get ready for your interview, switching on your smart and professional persona.
